Diego Calvo, passion for Rock and Roll.
The grand Diego Calvo opens the doors to his rocker universe to talk us about 11 years of Rock Nights and other projects.
Let’s get to know you better, tell us about your rock ‘n’ roll soul
My passion for rock started when I was a child, at home listening to my father’s records, stuff like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Beach Boys. After that the wild times of the 90s arrived with shaggy hair, skateboards, checked shirts, spliffs with a soundtrack of Nirvana, The Offspring, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and Pearl Jam.
In 2003 / 2004 I was working in the legendary Rustic bar, where local bands and DJs played rock ‘n’ roll. Rustic always brings back fond memories, it was a great place for me and many others. I was also working with the Music Box room in Manumission. In fact, the Music Box was the root from which Ibiza Rocks sprung.
Rustic’s last year of existence was in 2005, and during this year Rock Nights was born and the craziness commenced.
Tell us about your personal style, you have an enormous collection of Hawaiian and cowboy shirts. How did you obtain them?
In 2000, after my grunge period had finished, I became obsessed by vintage clothing, especially Hawaiian and cowboy shirts. Nowadays I have more than 100 and I have been asked if I would like to do an exhibition with them.
I still look for specific items in secondhand markets, during trips, on Ebay and of course in shops such as Flamingos Vintage, run by one of big buddies, Dani. In my new house the wardrobe is going to take up a big part of the budget.
Santos Dorado Hotel is a total tribute to rock. What makes up its essence?
Santos Dorado Hotel is a tribute to songs that are certified gold records, situated on the seafront, and where each room has a distinct musical theme. Some of the suites have names such as “Heroes” by David Bowie, “Love Me Tender” by Elvis Presley, “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles and “Heart of Glass” by Blondie.
When you put your heart and soul into a project you end up creating something marvellous, and I couldn’t be prouder of the final result. The rooms are full of references to rock such as Marshall fridges, Gibson guitars hanging on the walls, 200 Paiste cymbals as decoration, a record player that activates when you enter the room and plays the song the room is names after, without mentioning the pictures on the wall paying tribute to the artists.
Within Santos Dorado there is a space for 100 people called Heaven’s Door on the rooftop and there is a small club equipped with a Funktion One soundsystem called Backstage for 120 people.
Thursdays are all about acoustic music at Dorado Live Shows. What can you tell us about this new musical proposal?
We wanted to provide Santos Dorado with a live musical project and so we created Dorado Live Shows, a set of acoustic concerts by the sea. This summer we have brought L.A, Vinila von Bismark, Dorian, Is Tropical, Monarchy, Mystery Jets, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and the local band Uncle Sal, the closing concert will be with We Are Scientists. With this project we have continued to offer alternatives to the predominant sounds on the island, dance and electronica.
Let’s get on to our main topic, Rock Nights. 11 years of pure rock that nowadays takes place in the legendary Pikes Hotel. How would you describe something that has become a rock ‘n’ roll sanctuary?
Rock Nights is much more than a party, it is a way of life, a family, a story that we´ve created. Unlike the majority of the parties in Ibiza, where the attention is centred on the DJ, in Rock Nights the crowd and the atmosphere are the stars.
This week is the Closing Party of Rock Nights 11th summer season. What surprises do you have in store?
For Rock Nights Closing Party we are delighted to have one of the members of The Ramones, Marky Ramone, playing for us. We Are Scientists will also be present in the party and they will be playing an acoustic set the next day in Dorado Live Shows with a possible surprise DJ set included.
We are really excited about the Ibiza Rocks Closing Party concert this week with Wolf Alice, a really cool band that has won a Brit Award this year. The support band will be our good friends L.A, and both will be going to Rock Nights in Pikes afterwards.
